Oct. 31—NEWTOWN — Funeral arrangements are planned Monday for Peter Blomberg, the assistant fire chief of Botsford Fire Rescue and a father of four who was struck and killed by a car while crossing the street in Sandy Hook just six weeks after his retirement.

"He never said 'no' when there was a call for help — whether it came in the line of duty, or from someone he learned who just needed a helping hand," his family wrote in his obituary. "Pete kept the community of Newtown foremost in his thoughts throughout his life, second only to his devoted and loving family, friends, and colleagues."

Blomberg, 72, who graduated from Newtown High School in 1969 and became a finish carpenter, was a veteran of Newtown's fire service for a half century, rising through the ranks to first assistant chief.

The listing comes after the death last year of Albert Salame, who built the hotel.

"Until very recently, Pete was among the first responders at fire scenes to strap on an air pack and head into burning buildings," his obituary reads. "He had a spectacular record of responding to nearly all the calls for service Botsford Fire Rescue received and was often among those first on the scene at calls in other districts."

Calling hours are 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Honan Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Rose of Lima Church, where he attended parochial grammar school. Burial will be at St. Rose Cemetery in Sandy Hook.

A maintenance worker for Newtown schools until his retirement six weeks ago, Blomberg was a man with "a vitality and life force that his family admired and looked up to," his obituary says.

"Even up to a few hours before his death, Pete had responded to two fire calls, including one in Sandy Hook," the obituary reads. "Pete was a great storyteller, a lover of rock music — having worked concert security for years (and) a Harley-Davidson enthusiast."

Blomberg was on his way to the annual Newtown Board of Fire Commissioners meeting in Sandy Hook on Monday when he was struck by a vehicle as he crossed Church Hill Road. An investigating is continuing.
